Arla Foods – Taw Valley Creamery
Location: North Tawton
Client: SPDE / Arla Foods
Sector: Industrial
Project Overview
As part of the expansion of Arla Foods' new mozzarella production facility in North Tawton, VDS was appointed to deliver specialist interior construction and finishing works, supporting the enlargement of the existing processing and pasteurising areas. Working within a live food production environment, the project required careful planning, strict adherence to hygiene standards, and close coordination with the principal contractor and site engineering teams to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Scope of Works Our responsibilities included:
• Porcelain floor tiling
• Floor screeding and surface preparation
• Steel framing and partition systems
• Installation of rigid hygienic wall cladding
• Project management and site coordination
• Quality assurance and programme management
The Challenge
Delivering works within a live food manufacturing facility presented significant logistical and operational challenges. Strict hygiene protocols, restricted working areas, and carefully controlled access meant that every stage of the project had to be meticulously planned.
Maintaining programme milestones was critical, as any delays could have impacted the client's production schedule and resulted in significant operational costs.
Our Solution
Through detailed pre-construction planning and technical consultation with the project team, we developed a phased delivery programme that minimised disruption to ongoing factory operations.
Working collaboratively with Arla's engineering team, we responded quickly to design changes and evolving site conditions, ensuring the programme remained on track while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship and compliance.
The Outcome
The project was successfully completed on programme and to the required quality standards, providing durable, hygienic finishes suitable for a demanding food production environment.
The completed works formed an integral part of Arla's expanded processing facility, helping to create a modern, compliant, and efficient production space while supporting the successful delivery of this major industrial investment.
